Mumbai bowler Munaf Patel applauds as he watches Punjab batsmen David Miller and Shaun Marsh celebrate victory during the IPL 5 match at the Wankhede Stadium. |
It seemed that Tendulkar had taken over the captaincy from Harbhajan Singh. He set the field, coordinated with the bowlers and advised on spells. Team Mumbai had tried just about everything to resist the Punjab batsmen and nothing worked for them on Sunday evening at the Wankhede Stadium.
Chasing 163, Punjab rode on Shaun Marsh's astounding half-century - 68 off 40 deliveries - to bring about an electrifying six-wicket victory in a match that went all the way till the final over. The 28-year-old Marsh, a left-hander who has been prolific in the IPL for Team Punjab, walked in after openers Nitin Saini and Mandeep Singh had given the side a confident start with a 48-run partnership for the first wicket.
Aggression had to be the order of the day but Marsh didn't really come into his own until Punjab skipper David Hussey joined him at the other end. It was only after the two got going that Team Mumbai found it difficult to breathe inside the jam-packed Wankhede. The duo stood in a 71-run partnership for the third wicket and that effort made the difference.
Hussey left after scoring a 19-ball 21, more importantly playing a second fiddle to Marsh, the match-winner. The victory was still a distance away and looked tough until the 20th over when Marsh, joined by David Miller, scripted the unbelievable.
Earlier, when Team Mumbai won the toss and elected to bat first, they were looking at a target of 160. "If we got going well, we would've looked to try and push it to around 180," said opener James Franklin, the team's highest scorer on Sunday.
It was a cautious start indeed, brought about by Tendulkar, who walked out with Franklin. But a couple of run outs, especially the one involving Dinesh Karthik.
Munaf fined for offensive gesture
The evening also saw Mumbai's Munaf Patel getting into an argument with Punjab's Mandeep Singh. Munaf was fined 50% of his match fee for making offensive gestures to opposition players. In the third over of the Punjab innings, Munaf resorted to firing verbal volleys at Nitin Saini after the batsman hit him for two fours. It needed an intervention from the umpires to calm Munaf down.
