Morne Morkel added to a wonderful day for South Africa by removing Kevin Pieterse
South Africa enjoyed the type of day teams dream of which ended with England staggering on 102 for 4 after being overwhelmed by the insatiable hunger of two batsmen. Hashim Amla scored the country's first triple century in Tests, building an overwhelming stand of 377 with Jacques Kallis, as South Africa amassed a lead of 252. The visitors then made major inroads into a dispirited England side who lurched to the close with a huge task ahead to leave The Oval with the series level.

England's troubles in this match may have been created by their failure to take a solid position into a big first-innings score
It was surely after watching his team suffer a day the like of which England endured on the fourth day at The Oval that inspired Edvard Munch to paint The Scream. England were humiliated. Had this been a boxing contest the referee would have stopped it; had it been horse racing the jockey would have pulled-up their mount; had it been swimming, England would have drowned. Had Graham Gooch, England's batting coach, simply muttered "The horror; the horror" when he was brought out to speak to the press at the close of play, he could not have summed up his side's position more aptly.

Dale Steyn removed Ravi Bopara for a duck during a fired-up spell
South Africa were a team transformed on the second day at The Oval. The intensity and aggression, lacking for most of Thursday, was back in the bowling as they limited England's ambitions to 385 - not an insignificant total on pitch likely to offer increasing turn, but nowhere near enough to close out the match - then Graeme Smith and Hashim Amla gave an early indication of the sturdiness of South Africa's top order.

He may profess to being just another member of the attack but Dale Steyn once again showed that leadership comes naturally
Dale Steyn rediscovered some of his talismanic intensity on day tw
Dale Steyn maintains that he does not want to be a hero. Having started life in a small town where idols was more than just a bad reality television show, Steyn understood what it was to worship, because he did it all the time. He knew that it meant leaving people with little room to live as reverence so often turned into suffocation.

South Africa represent the toughest test of England's credentials as the No. 1 ranked Test side, according to James Anderson. However, Anderson insisted that, while in the past England may have allowed the pressure of such a high-profile series to affect their performance, they now had the weapons and the confidence to overcome the tourists.
