Graeme Smith smashed a double century and AB de Villiers hit a robust hundred to guide South Africa to an imperious position in the must-win second Test against Pakistan in Dubai on Thursday. South African skipper made 227 not out for his fifth double ton while De Villiers -- dropped off the first delivery by wicket-keeper Adnan Akmal off paceman Mohammad Irfan -- was unbeaten on 157 for his 17th Test century.
The duo plundered a hapless Pakistan attack to take South Africa to 460-4 at close on the second day, giving them a big 361-run lead with three full days to play to force a series-levelling win. Pakistan won the first Test by seven wickets in Abu Dhabi last week.
Smith and De Villiers have set an all time South African record for the fifth wicket in Tests with 326, beating the previous best of 267 set by Jacques Kallis and Ashwell Prince against the West Indies at Antigua in 2005.

Following the report, he was required to undergo biomechanical testing of his action at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra last Wednesday. The analysis, conducted under the CA and International Cricket Council testing procedures, required Botha to bowl six balls from each of the deliveries in his repertoire; an off-spinner, quicker ball and flicker ball.
The testing found that Botha's action for all deliveries is under, or equal to, the allowable elbow extension of 15 degrees, with an average extension of nine degrees. Had any delivery in those 18 balls been deemed illegal, Botha would have failed the testing. His action was captured by a 20 camera motion analysis system sampling at 250 frames per second, allowing for 3D measurement of human movement. Commenting on the analysis, Cricket Australia Senior Manager Cricket Operations Sean Cary said: "The process for dealing with these matters is an international standard testing procedure.

India in South Africa 2013-14: Decision on India's SA tour likely 'before weekend'.
There appears to be headway into the discussions between Cricket South Africa and the BCCI, taking place over India's tour to South Africa, even before the heads of the two boards meet in London as part of the ICC's executive board. The final decision with regard to the tour is expected to be made "before the weekend".
During a "fruitful" discussion between both the parties in Mumbai on October 12, the BCCI had offered to play two Tests and three ODIs in the month of December on the condition that CSA chief executive Haroon Lorgat is not involved in India affairs in future.

Pakistan v South Africa 2013-14: South Africa target uncertain top order
Mohammad Hafeez's omission from the Pakistan Test squad has given South Africa a clear indication of where to draw the battle lines for the two-match series. With Khurram Manzoor set to occupy one opening spot, and the other yet to be decided but likely to be filled with a less experienced batsman than Hafeez, South Africa's seamers are targeting Pakistan's fragility at the top.
"Our pace attack against their opening batters will be important to set up the series for us," South Africa's coach Russell Domingo said ahead of the first training session in Dubai. "Hafeez's form has been a bit of a concern for them for a period of time. But he is a quality bowler and a quality batsmen and we are not displeased that he is unlikely to play a part."

South Africa enjoyed the type of day teams dream of which ended with England staggering on 102 for 4 after being overwhelmed by the insatiable hunger of two batsmen. Hashim Amla scored the country's first triple century in Tests, building an overwhelming stand of 377 with Jacques Kallis, as South Africa amassed a lead of 252. The visitors then made major inroads into a dispirited England side who lurched to the close with a huge task ahead to leave The Oval with the series level.

Dale Steyn maintains that he does not want to be a hero. Having started life in a small town where idols was more than just a bad reality television show, Steyn understood what it was to worship, because he did it all the time. He knew that it meant leaving people with little room to live as reverence so often turned into suffocation.

Respect to Biff
Graeme Smith has been a figure easy to misunderstand. That should not hide the fact that he is among the toughest, most intelligent cricketers around - and a great batsman to boot
| Smith: brings out the worst in people |
There are only two players called Graeme in the annals of South African Test cricket. In fact, one is named after the other. Both bat left-handed and both are renowned for hitting the ball with a controlled fury that suggests they never want to lay eyes on the offending orb ever again.
