Mahela Jayawardene on why Sri Lanka decided to settle for a draw in Pallekele, and the factors that helped his side beat Pakistan
Mahela Jayawardene: "Nobody gave us a chance
Some people have argued that we weren't ambitious enough to push for a win in the Pallekele Test to seal the series 2-0 instead of 1-0. We would have loved to finish with a memorable victory, but unfortunately that was not possible in the end. Nevertheless, we came out on top against Pakistan, who had beaten the No.1 Test side in the world (England) 3-0, by playing positive cricket in tough situations. Nobody gave us a chance, even in the one-day series. I still remember the press conference at the start of the series, when a couple of Pakistan journalists asked Misbah-ul-Haq if they were going to win the series 3-0, 3-1 or 4-1. Even before the Test series nobody gave us a chance.

Misbah-ul-Haq declared after making a quick half-century and taking Pakistan past 550
Afternoon showers on day three put an outright result in serious doubt as only one session could be played out. In that session, Pakistan added 63 to their overnight 488 before declaring. In the next 70 minutes, Sri Lanka were put through a sterner test than the Pakistan openers, but they lost just one wicket.

Sri Lanka v Pakistan, 2nd Test, SSC, Colombo, 2nd day
Azhar Ali gets the hundred, and makes it a big one
The Colombo weather hurt Pakistan's push for a result, allowing only 44.2 overs on the second day, during which the visitors added 154 for 3 to their overnight 334. It could have been worse for Pakistan after the slow start they made to the day, but their batsmen showed more urgency as the clouds gathered.

Sri Lanka v Pakistan, 2nd Test, SSC, Colombo, 1st day
Sri Lanka made the aggressive move of fielding first at the SSC
A day before the match, Mahela Jayawardene said his side was not looking to sit on the 1-0 lead. He stayed true to his word at the toss, choosing to bowl first on a flat SSC pitch. The obvious rationale behind the move was to capitalise on whatever juice the famously benign

Sri Lanka v Pakistan, 1st ODI, Pallekele
Misbah-ul-Haq and Mahela Jayawardene with the trophy their teams are playing for
The drawn Twenty20 series in Hambantota, in which there was little to separate the teams, has set up the five-ODI contest nicely. The pattern of both T20s was the same: the batsmen made just enough runs and the bowlers used the swing and seam available in the evenings to defend modest targets.

Pakistan fast bowler Sohail Tanvir has been retained for the ODIs in Sri Lanka and will replace the injured opening batsman Nasir Jamshed
in the squad. Tanvir impressed in the two Twenty20s in Hambantota,

Pakistan in Sri Lanka 2012:
Low-key start to high-profile series with well-practiced Pakistan holding a slender advantage
The performance of Sri Lanka's experienced trio of Tillakaratne Dilshan, Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara will be key for the home team
Till recently, Pakistan's full tour of Sri Lanka for a series of two Twenty20s, five ODIs and three Tests existed only in the ICC's Future Tours Programme. The schedule was formally approved by the PCB a month ago and whatever build-up that existed was lost in the frenzy of the IPL. Despite its perfect positioning - the IPL is over, those from the two sides in question are free of other commitments and Sri Lanka is the venue for the World Twenty20 - the pre-series hype that usually accompanies a contest between two high-profile teams as Sri Lanka and Pakistan is missing.
