Bangladesh's first Test against New Zealand ended in a draw in Chittagong

Bangladesh's first Test against New Zealand ended in a draw in Chittagong
Gazi, who hit an unbeaten 101 on Saturday, joined Alok Kapali as the second Bangladesh bowler to claim a Test hat-trick

Bangladesh's Sohag Gazi followed a maiden Test century with a hat-trick to light up the final stages of the first Test against New Zealand, which ended in a draw in Chittagong on Sunday. The 22-year-old off-spinner had Corey Anderson leg-before, Bradley-John Watling caught behind and Doug Bracewell caught in the slips off successive balls at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury stadium.

Gazi's hat-trick, which gave him his sixth wicket in the innings, saw the Black Caps slump from 260-4 to 260-7 in their second knock after lunch on the fifth and final day. The tourists declared the innings closed at 287-7, leaving Bangladesh a target of 256 runs in a minimum of 45 overs to win the Test and take the lead in the two-match series.

The hosts showed no appetite to chase the stiff target and ended play on 173-3 in the 49th over, with Shakib Al Hasan unbeaten on 50 and newcomer Mominul Haque on 22. Gazi, who hit an unbeaten 101 batting at number eight on Saturday, joined Alok Kapali as only the second Bangladesh bowler to claim a Test hat-trick.

Kapali had achieved the feat against Pakistan in Peshawar in 2003 when he dismissed tailenders Shabbir Ahmed, Danish Kaneria and Umar Gul in three consecutive deliveries. "This was obviously a very good Test match for me, it has made me believe I belong to this level," said Gazi. "I will go into the next match with a lot of self-confidence."

Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim said his team, ranked at the bottom of the table at number 10, dominated a major part of the match.

Bangladesh lead by 32 runs 1st Innings against New Zealand

Bangladesh v NZ, 1st Test, Chittagong, 4th day: Gazi, Robiul give Bangladesh lead

Innings Bangladesh 501 (Gazi 101*, Robiul 33) lead New Zealand 469 by 32 runs

Sohag Gazi scored his maiden Test century immediately after lunch on the fourth day, before Bangladesh were bowled out for 501 with a lead of 32. Robiul Islam fell in the first over after the break, top-edging a pull. Gazi reached his century with a cut for four off Doug Bracewell and Bangladesh passed 500 for only the third time with another boundary. The innings ended when Rubel Hossain edged to slip off Ish Sodhi.
With two innings completed and just over four sessions left in the Test, a draw loomed but the highlight of the opening session on the fourth day was that Bangladesh managed to take a lead. Gazi was within five runs of a maiden Test hundred and his ninth-wicket stand with Robiul frustrated New Zealand, who picked up only one wicket in the morning session.
Resuming on 380 for 7, Bangladesh lost their eighth wicket in the fifth over of the day, when Abdur Razzak was trapped lbw by Trent Boult to a ball that came back in. Gazi got aggressive the following over when he hit consecutive boundaries off Doug Bracewell. He sped towards his fifty with a pulled six off the same bowler and he reached the milestone by lofting Corey Anderson down the ground.

Mominul Haque 's maiden Test century led Bangladesh's strong

Mominul Haque 's maiden Test century led Bangladesh's strong

Bangladesh v NZ, 1st Test, Chittagong, 3rd day: Mominul ton leads Bangladesh's reply

Today: Lunch Bangladesh 176 for 3 (Mominul 130*, Shakib 15*) trail New Zealand 469 by 293 runs

Mominul Haque 's maiden Test century led Bangladesh's strong reply on the third morning in Chittagong, one in which New Zealand managed to claim only one wicket. It was a sedate session on a featherbed of a pitch as the hosts put themselves in a good position to match New Zealand's 469.
Mominul began his innings at a frenetic pace on the second day, and he continued in the same vein this morning with a brace of boundaries off the seamers. He edged one of those off Trent Boult that went through the vacant second slip region. He reached his century with a boundary off Boult, a neat square drive past cover on one knee, off just 98 balls.
It was hard work for the New Zealand bowlers, though Boult did induce a few edges off Marshall Ayub. Marshall's knock was in contrast to Mominul's, hitting just one boundary in his 25. It was a rash shot that led to Marshall's dismissal, though, as he chased a wide delivery from the debutant Corey Anderson and edged to the keeper.
Kane Williamson got a few to turn past the left-hander before Mominul took him on, launching a couple of boundaries over mid-on. Shakib Al Hasan played a loose drive off Williamson and nearly spooned a catch to point. Shakib and Mominul played steadily till the interval and Bangladesh's main task will be crossing the follow-on mark.
