"IPL5 - T20 isn't about individuals: Sourav Ganguly"

T20 isn't about individuals: Ganguly

NEW DELHI: Pune skipper Sourav Ganguly's all-round performance against Team Delhi has captured the imagination of fans everywhere. Excerpts from a candid conversation with the former India captain...

Why didn't you bowl earlier in the tournament?

I wasn't 100% fit in the earlier games. I had a neck problem. Against Delhi I was fit enough to bowl. Fortunately, it helped my team. I hope to bowl in future matches as well if the situation demands.

People who watched Saturday's game are still talking about the way you ran after dismissing
Kevin Pietersen...

Are they? (Laughs) Pietersen's dismissal was crucial for Pune and we got the breakthrough at the right time. This is the beginning of the tournament and we've won only four matches out of seven. The target is to do well in matches to come. I'm taking one match at a time.

Your batting seems to be getting better with every match. What are your thoughts?

You have to keep playing your shots in T20. There will be days when things will click and vice-versa. People often confuse T20 with Tests and 50-over formats because they don't understand that time factor is a huge thing. You get limited time to settle down and have to play strokes from the word go.

I enjoy such challenges. This format is not about individuals but about the team. If I score runs and my team loses, there is no point. We have to ensure that the team does well at the end of the day.

Most of the captains seem to wilt under pressure. On top of this, there is also extra pressure from the team owners. You seem immune...

There will always be pressure to perform and win matches in IPL. But it all depends on how you handle it. As far as Pune team owners are concerned, there is no such pressure and that has helped the team. Even the home atmosphere in Pune is terrific.

Is Uthappa as makeshift wicketkeeper a worry?

It is at times, but Robin is doing a very good job. Ultimately, we have to see the team balance and right now, his performance behind the stumps has been satisfying. We don't have many options because we didn't take part in the auction.

When will Ashok Dinda be back in action?

You can't really say when he is going to be back. Side strain is something which needs daily monitoring and right now, we can only hope to see him back in the team at the earliest.

Has the chucking controversy affected Samuels?

There is no such thing. As I have said before, Samuels' action is clean and he was not in the playing XI in the last match because we needed a pacer.

Is Luke Wright a better replacement for Angelo Mathews?

Wright is a quality player and that's why he is being picked. We have to see how to play the best combination.

The May 5 match between Kolkata and Pune is generating as much hype as an India-Pak match...

That is just another IPL match and there is no need to read much into it.
